As water levels fluctuate, river erosion has intensified across several parts of the district.
The worst-affected areas are the settlements along the banks of the Teesta and the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers.
Almost every day, agricultural land, homesteads, and various structures are being swallowed by the rivers. Several educational institutions, mosques, madrasas, and local embankments are now at risk.
Fearing the loss of everything, many riverside residents are dismantling their homes and moving in search of safer shelter.
